Product Information

The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™

Our Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ is the original sharp edge tester that was developed to satisfy Underwriter Laboratories UL Standard 1439 to test for edge sharpness in manufactured products.

Back in 1973 Technical Engineering Service was approached by Underwriters Laboratories to develop a product that would test the sharp edges of manufactured products for safety in handling and product use. Everything from appliances to electronics to metal fabricated parts, etc., has the potential to be dangerous if rough edges are not tested for sharpness.

Our founder, an engineer, created and built the first production model of the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ and Technical Engineering Service is the original manufacturer of the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™.

For over 40 years, our Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ has been continually refined from both a manufacturing and user standpoint. When you use the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ you comply with the international standards set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Technical Engineering Service’s Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ is the leader in product safety testing equipment for edge sharpness.

Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ Fact Sheet

Underwriters Laboratories UL Standard 1439

Our Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ complies with Underwriters Laboratories U.L. Standard 1439 for “Determination of Sharpness of Edges”.

This Standard calls for the use of the Sharp Edge Tester to provide an objective and uniform test method for determining compliance with existing safety requirements.

If you have a new product that you plan to submit to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for approval, you should use a sharp edge tester to test the edges. Your product may not be approved by UL without doing so.

Why You Need the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™

Everything from appliances to electronics to metal fabricated parts, etc., has the potential to be dangerous if its rough edges are not tested for sharpness. Our Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ complies with Underwriters Laboratories U.L. Standard 1439 for “Determination of Sharpness of Edges”.

How Does the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ Work?

The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™, partnered with our Tape Cap Kit Model TC-3™, (specifically made to be used with the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™) is extremely easy to use. When testing with the force the tester applies, a dangerously sharp edge will cut through the two outer layers of the sensing tape on the Tape Cap exposing the black layer of tape (bottom layer). This means that your product does not meet UL’s sharp edge safety testing standards. If you do not cut through to the first layer of beige Teflon tape, then your edge meets the UL Standard 1439 and is acceptable for consumer use.

Used according to directions our uniquely engineered tester provides the proper pressure for this sensitive test. Run the tester
2 inches along the edge of a manufactured item and then back 2 inches to its starting position, without the removal of the tester from the edge, and it will provide a PASS/FAIL test of the object’s safety for general use. The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ works with specially constructed tape caps (simulating the skin on a finger) that fit onto the pressure head of the tester. When the tester is run along an edge, the tape cap will either remain intact (pass) or slit open where third layer of foam (black bottom layer) is visible (fail).

Materials that Require Testing

The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ cannot test all materials because the tool is designed to exert a specified amount of pressure on the item in order to provide an accurate determination. Items that cannot withstand that pressure cannot be tested by the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™.

To help you determine if the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ can test your product, use the following list as a guideline:

Materials that can be tested:
  • Metal
  • Glass
  • Some plastics
Materials that cannot be tested:
  • Fabric and metallic string or thread
  • Non-durable plastics such as forks and spoons
  • Paper and paper products

If you are uncertain of whether your part can be tested, please contact us and we can discuss it with you and/or have you send us a sample to test.

Beware of Sharp Edge Tester Knock-Offs!

The original Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ is manufactured in the United States and conforms to rigorous manufacturing and compliance standards.

Look-alike products are manufactured overseas, some specifically in China. These manufacturers have been known to try to duplicate our product and simply focus on price and producing it as cheaply as possible through use of inferior materials. They use photos of our tester, product name, verbiage and our trademark illegally. We cannot attest to their reliability as inferior parts can render the tester useless in determining proper edge sharpness. If it is counterfeit, there is no guarantee it meets safety standards. The real Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™, manufactured by Technical Engineering Service, is made of quality material, is lightweight, flexible, and especially suited for continued use without fatigue. It meets U.L. Standard 1439.

Technical Engineering Service provides recalibration, repair and replacement part services only to its own products, which are proudly made in the USA.

Additionally, since our tester is manufactured in the USA, the instructions are in English, and we provide easily accessible customer service online or via telephone.
